Some days, managing a team is… a test of patience.
One of them sleeps on the job – literally – curled up with a cushion balanced on her head like it’s the most natural thing in the world. The other arrives uninvited to every meeting, insists on holding a stick and a tennis ball simultaneously, and somehow always demands to be the centre of attention.
Neither respects personal space. Both interrupt with alarming regularity. And performance reviews? Let’s just say we’re not hitting KPIs… unless “being able to annoy the cat” is suddenly a metric.
But here’s the thing: these two – Lucas and Lucy (my dogs) – remind me of something I sometimes forget.
You can’t always be productive 9am to 5pm.
That presence can matter more than perfection.
And, that sometimes, the most meaningful colleagues are the ones who simply sit beside you – may not be in your immediate team – expect nothing, offer comfort just by being there, and occasionally are funny without even trying.
So yes, they’re chaotic, stubborn, and wildly unqualified for their roles.
But they’ve taught me more about patience, empathy, and unconditional connection than most training programmes ever could, and for that, I’ll keep them on the team.
**Any resemblance to actual colleagues is purely coincidental. Although one of them has stolen my lunch and barked at the postman before, I’m not naming names!
