What Not to Forget When Posting a Job: 5 Dos and Don’ts That Matter

Hiring is one of the most important things a company does.

But too often, we rush through writing job ads or throw up a LinkedIn Easy Apply without much thought

The result? A wave of irrelevant CVs, missed opportunities, and a whole lot of time wasted. If you’re preparing to post a job and want to attract the right people—not just any people—start here.

✅ THE DOS:

1. Be specific about success
Describe what good looks like in the role—not just the tasks. What would success look like after 3, 6, or 12 months? Clarity here attracts confidence.

2. Share a salary or range
Yes, really. It builds trust and helps you attract people at the right level. If you’re worried about showing your hand too early, that’s a signal to revisit your internal clarity, not your job ad.

3. Filter for alignment, not admin
Don’t ask people what software they’ve used. Ask what they’ve achieved. Values and mindset matter more than tick-box experience.

4. Let your culture shine through
You don’t need a quirky tone if that’s not you—but make sure your ad sounds human. It’s your first impression, after all.

5. Stay human in your process
People remember how you make them feel. Even if you’re using automation, set it up with empathy—send updates, give timelines, and be respectful of candidates’ time.

🚫 THE DON’TS:

1. Don’t ask for salary expectations
Especially when the range is wide. If your role could realistically be anywhere between £30k–£130k depending on experience, asking candidates to guess just sets them up to lowball—or gets them rejected for aiming too high.

2. Don’t use “Easy Apply” with no filters
You’ll drown in irrelevant applications. A couple of well-placed questions can help you find the gems.

3. Don’t make the application a chore
If your form is 10 pages long and asks for a re-upload of everything in the CV, candidates will drop off. Keep it smart and simple.

4. Don’t ghost
Even an automated “thanks but no thanks” is better than silence. Your hiring process is a reflection of your internal culture—make it a good one.

5. Don’t forget your employer brand
Every job post, every reply, every interview is a signal. Make sure it says what you want it to say.

Closing:
Hiring shouldn’t feel like fishing with a blindfold on. A thoughtful job post isn’t just admin—it’s strategy, brand, and experience wrapped into one. Get it right, and the right people will come to you.
